One of the first campaigns shot using Virtual Production at Pier59 Studios, this Neiman Marcus spot highlights the incredible flexibility of this technology.

We had the incredible opportunity to collaborate with Blake Lively, Hugh Jackman, and the visionary director Baz Luhrmann. In this video, we dive into the innovative strategies employed by our virtual production team, highlighting the cutting-edge techniques that brought this extraordinary stills project to life. From pre-pro to camera wrap, discover how we pushed the boundaries of creativity and technology. This project showcases how Virtual Production is not only suitable for motion but also for top-tier still campaigns.

This Tom Ford campaign was shot using our 65” main LED wall as a dynamic reflection tool, perfectly suited for showcasing ski goggles and sunglasses. By utilizing the LED wall’s realistic reflections, the creative team achieved stunning visuals in-camera, capturing the intricate details and depth of each reflection without the need for added visual effects in post-production. This innovative approach not only saved significant time and resources but also ensured a high-quality, polished result straight out of the shoot. The campaign benefited from a more efficient workflow while delivering visually striking, authentic imagery that enhances the luxurious appeal of Tom Ford’s products.

Each camera had its background adjusted through our Disguise software, allowing for creative freedom and flexibility in framing each shot with ease. As the shoot progressed—moving from two-person to three-person and single-person interviews—all backgrounds on the LED wall were pre-programmed and instantly recallable at the click of a button. This setup enabled rapid changes, allowing the crew to complete interviews with the entire main cast in just a single day, with the final product already composited and captured directly in-camera.

CBS Sports utilized Bolt robotic arms with pre-programmed dolly and articulated camera movements to create this engaging and fun reel featuring the hosts of NFL Today. This content is used throughout each football broadcast of the 2024 season—before the game, during interviews, and more. Thanks to the combination of ICVFX and robotic camera control, this project required minimal post-production, enabling a very fast turnaround and seamless broadcast.

The Anine Bing x Kate Moss campaign activated Studio 7—a 3,400-square-foot columnless space flooded with southwest daylight through its full wall of windows and skylight. Photographer Chris Colls captured Kate Moss, with creative direction by Anine Bing and styling by Nathalie Frederiksen. This high-profile production highlighted Studio 7’s versatility and striking natural light, making it ideal for iconic campaigns.

Prada’s Leather Goods campaign, featuring actress Scarlett Johansson, was captured at Pier59 Studios, where the expansive 110,000 square feet of column-free space enabled efficient, large-scale production. The team activated multiple spaces, including Stage C, Studio 3, Studio 5, Studio 6, Studio 7, and Studio 9, demonstrating the versatility of the venue to accommodate complex, multi-component shoots.

Scarlett Johansson’s dynamic presence elevated the campaign’s creative direction, with a team of industry leaders bringing Prada’s vision to life. The production captured the essence of the brand’s luxury in a setting that effortlessly blends functionality and elegance.

Full Studio Activation  

Netflix’s inaugural in-person upfronts provided media with an immersive branded experience. The studios were transformed into a real-world experience of some of Netflix most iconic and popular shows, including a mock version of Squid Game, a string ensemble with characters in period costume to celebrate the new season of Bridgerton and a gastronomic experience inspired by the many cooking shows on Netflix housed within Pier59’s iconic café and deck with gorgeous views of NYC and the Hudson River. All of this was tied together through the use of Pier59’s studio-wide LED displays controlled by advanced Disguise display systems to be perfectly synchronized to the exacting details of the 2-day event.

Renowned photographers James Michelfelder and Nagi Sakai expertly captured these collections, highlighting a perfect blend of functionality and style.

For this campaign, both video and still images were captured with unparalleled flexibility and efficiency, thanks to various Virtual Production techniques and surfaces, including our movable LED carts.

Chivas Regal utilized Pier59 Studios’ versatile event spaces for The Venture, a program dedicated to supporting startups that drive positive social impact through funding, resources, and mentorship. The event brilliantly leveraged the venue’s column-free areas to create a central stage for the main presentation. The scope of the event extended to Studios 4 and 5, as well as Pier59’s stunning deck, seamlessly blending indoor and outdoor experiences to enhance the event’s ambiance and reach. Guests enjoyed breathtaking views of One World Trade Center and the Hudson River from our private restaurant, adding to the event’s appeal.

Our main LED wall in Stage C enables seamless shooting across multiple locations with a wide range of lighting setups—all achievable in a single day and directly in-camera. This technology provides unprecedented flexibility for creative teams, allowing them to experiment with different settings and moods without the need for physical location changes. For this campaign, 2D plates were utilized to immerse the talent in a variety of environments, enhancing the visual depth of each scene while significantly reducing pre and post-production costs. This approach maximizes efficiency and creativity, allowing for high-quality results in a streamlined process.
