Don’t Count Tungsten Out

Don’t Count Tungsten Out

In the race toward lighter, faster, and more efficient production tools, it can feel like everything old is destined for the scrap heap. Companies like Aputure and Nanlux are moving at breakneck speed, redefining what LED lighting can do. Recent releases—like Aputure’s XT52—show just how far LEDs have come, delivering output and control that would have been unthinkable a decade ago.

It’s tempting to assume this progress means the end of tungsten and HMI fixtures: heavy, power-hungry relics from another era.

But history suggests otherwise.

When “Obsolete” Becomes Essential Again

We’ve been here before. When the Alexa first emerged, many filmmakers mourned what felt like the inevitable death of film. Fifteen years later, audiences are more conscious than ever of how movies are made. The IMAX experience is more coveted than ever. Movie posters proudly advertise capture formats. Once-forgotten processes like VistaVision are back on the big screen.

Vinyl records disappeared—until they didn’t.

Film point-and-shoots vanished—until Kodak brought them back, and film students started using them to document parties with blown highlights and unapologetic flash.

At the exact moment digital cameras surpassed film in resolution and dynamic range, magazine covers leaned into grain, blur, and imperfection.

The lesson is simple: in the arts, technical superiority does not automatically translate into creative desirability.

LEDs Are Incredible—But They’re Not Everything

LED lighting has changed the economics of production in profound ways. Today, emerging photographers and filmmakers can own powerful, studio-grade fixtures that fit into a suitcase. Costs are lower. Access is broader. Flexibility is unmatched.

And that’s a good thing.

But when studios and rental houses rush to dump tungsten and HMI fixtures entirely, something gets lost.

Even now, LEDs don’t fully replicate the punch of an HMI, especially at scale. They haven’t reached the upper wattage thresholds of classic 12Ks or 24Ks. And when it comes to skin tone, highlight roll-off, and that unmistakable “old Hollywood” quality of light, the difference is still visible.

You can shoot on film to chase that classic look—but without classic lighting, you’re only halfway there.

A Full Lighting Palette, Not a Single Answer

At PIER59 Studios, our Location Services philosophy mirrors how creatives actually work: there is no single right tool, only the right tool for the moment.

We carry the latest LED technology—from XT52s to 400Xs—while continuing to maintain and service our tungsten and HMI fixtures from ARRI. Whether you’re keeping budgets lean, chasing a timeless aesthetic, or blending old and new into something entirely your own, we’re equipped to support it.

Technology will continue to evolve. Trends will cycle. But the craft—the feel of light on skin, the emotional weight of an image—endures.

Sometimes, the future looks best when it’s lit by the past.
